A phone may be approaching that stage when:

  • The battery is swollen, leaking, or severely degraded

  • Compatible replacement parts are unavailable
  • The phone cannot be securely prepared for another user

Should You Repair, Reuse, Trade In, Donate, or Recycle It?

Repair may be worthwhile when the phone still receives necessary software support and the problem is limited to a replaceable battery, screen, charging port, or similar component.

A functioning device may be suitable for reuse, resale, donation, or trade-in when:

  • It works reliably
  • Personal data can be removed
  • Account and activation locks can be disabled
  • The battery is not damaged
  • Its condition is described accurately
  • Another user can activate and use it safely

The EPA recommends considering donation or reuse for working electronics and recycling devices that no longer have a practical second use.

Recycling is generally appropriate when the phone is severely damaged, unsupported, impractical to repair, unsuitable for secure reuse, or has remained unused after replacement.

How to Prepare an Old Smartphone for Recycling

Before transferring a smartphone:

  1. Back up photographs, contacts, messages, and required files.
  2. Sign out of personal and business accounts.
  3. Remove device-management profiles where applicable.
  4. Disable activation and account locks.
  5. Remove the SIM card and removable memory card.
  6. Use the manufacturer-supported erase or factory-reset process.
  7. Confirm that personal information is no longer accessible.
  8. Report battery swelling, leaking, overheating, or physical damage.

Deleting individual applications, photographs, or messages is not the same as completing a supported device reset.

Do not puncture, bend, crush, or attempt to remove an integrated lithium-ion battery. EPA guidance states that lithium-ion batteries and devices containing them should not be placed in household trash or curbside recycling bins because they can create fire risks within ordinary waste systems.

A phone with a leaking or damaged battery may require special handling. Confirm acceptance before transporting it.
