Preparing scrap metal does not require a workshop full of specialized equipment. For most homeowners, contractors, and small businesses, a few practical tools are enough to identify common metals, keep materials organized, and remove simple attachments before visiting the yard.

Stripping every cable is not automatically necessary, however. Insulated copper wire is already a recognized scrap category, and the time required to strip it should be considered against the amount and type of wire.

For larger quantities, separating bare copper from insulated cable can make sorting easier. Burning insulation should never be used as a shortcut because it creates unnecessary hazards and is not an appropriate way to prepare scrap.

Moving Heavy Scrap Requires the Right Equipment

Weight becomes an issue quickly when working with steel, cast iron, machinery components, appliances, or containers filled with dense metal.

A hand truck, dolly, or sturdy cart can reduce repeated lifting and make loading safer. Long pipe, sheet metal, and irregular pieces also need careful handling because they can shift or expose sharp edges.
