Not Sure What Metal You Have? A Guide to Common Scrap Metal Types

A pile of scrap metal can contain several materials that look surprisingly similar. Old pipe, appliance parts, hardware, wire, machinery components, and construction scrap may include steel, aluminum, copper, brass, stainless steel, or other metals.

You do not need specialized equipment to make a useful first identification. A magnet, the color and weight of the material, its original use, and any visible coatings or attachments can provide strong clues before you bring it to the yard.

Start With Ferrous vs. Non-Ferrous Metal

The simplest way to divide scrap metal is into ferrous and non-ferrous categories. Ferrous metals contain iron and include common steel and cast iron. Non-ferrous metals include copper, brass, aluminum, and many other alloys.

A magnet is one of the easiest tools for basic sorting. Strong attraction usually indicates a ferrous metal. If the magnet does not stick, the material may be non-ferrous, although that result does not identify the exact metal.

Some items contain several materials. An aluminum component may have steel bolts, or a brass valve may have a steel handle, so test more than one area when possible.

Steel and Iron

Steel and iron are among the most common types of scrap by volume. They appear in structural material, machinery, appliances, shelving, automotive parts, tools, fencing, pipes, and construction equipment.

Most ordinary steel and iron respond strongly to a magnet and may develop red-brown rust after exposure to moisture. Cast iron tends to be heavy, thick, and more brittle than ordinary steel and may appear in cookware, older pipes, machinery bases, and engine components.

Basic separation from copper, brass, aluminum, and stainless steel is already useful before visiting the yard.

Aluminum

Aluminum is generally silver-gray, lightweight, and nonmagnetic. It is commonly found in window frames, siding, gutters, beverage cans, patio furniture, ladders, automotive parts, HVAC components, and manufacturing scrap.

Weight is one of the easiest clues. A large aluminum component often feels surprisingly light compared with a similarly sized steel item.

A magnet should not stick to the main aluminum body, although steel screws or reinforcement may still be present. Aluminum also does not develop the red-brown rust associated with ordinary carbon steel.

Copper

Copper is usually one of the easiest metals to recognize because clean material has a reddish-orange color. Older copper may become brown, dark, or develop green oxidation after long exposure to moisture.

Common sources include electrical wire, plumbing pipe, HVAC tubing, roofing, motors, and manufacturing scrap. Copper is nonmagnetic and relatively dense compared with aluminum.

Condition matters when copper is classified. Bare clean wire, insulated cable, clean tubing, and pipe with solder or fittings may fall into different categories, so keep clean material separate when practical.

Brass

Brass is a copper-based alloy generally made with zinc. It usually has a yellow or gold appearance and is commonly found in plumbing fittings, valves, faucets, locks, door hardware, and mechanical components.

Brass is nonmagnetic and feels relatively heavy for its size. If a magnet sticks strongly to an apparently brass-colored item, steel may be present beneath the finish.

Scratching a small hidden area can also help. Solid brass generally remains yellow-gold beneath the surface, while brass-plated steel or zinc-based material may reveal a gray or silver base.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is common in kitchen equipment, appliances, fabrication, industrial machinery, food-processing equipment, and architectural applications. It usually has a silver appearance and is valued for its strength and corrosion resistance.

Magnet testing can be less straightforward than with ordinary steel because some stainless grades are magnetic while others are not. Appearance and original use can therefore provide additional clues.

Because stainless grades can vary in composition, suspected stainless steel should be kept separate from regular steel rather than automatically mixed with it.

Lead, Zinc, and Other Metals

Scrap loads may also include metals such as lead, zinc, and nickel-containing alloys. These can appear in batteries, specialty equipment, older building components, manufacturing materials, and industrial applications.

Lead is particularly dense and soft compared with many common metals. Zinc may appear as a coating on galvanized steel or in certain cast components, while nickel is often found as part of an alloy.

These materials can be difficult to identify accurately without experience. If you are uncertain, keep questionable scrap separate instead of mixing it into another category.

Use Several Clues Together

No single household test can identify every scrap metal correctly. A magnet may separate many ferrous metals from non-ferrous ones, but several materials can produce the same result.

Look at several characteristics together:

  • Magnetic or nonmagnetic behavior
  • Surface and underlying color
  • Relative weight
  • Signs of rust or oxidation
  • Original use of the item
  • Attached metals or non-metal components

A lightweight silver nonmagnetic frame may be aluminum, while a heavy yellow nonmagnetic plumbing fitting may be brass. Reddish wire is likely copper, while a strongly magnetic structural component is more likely ordinary steel.

Keep Different Metals Separate

Once you have identified obvious material types, keep them in separate buckets, boxes, bins, or sections of the load. Copper, brass, aluminum, stainless steel, and ordinary ferrous scrap should not automatically be mixed together.

Separation makes it easier for the yard to inspect and classify the material. It also prevents smaller non-ferrous pieces from becoming buried beneath heavier steel.

Avoid unnecessary dismantling. Removing an easy attachment can be useful, but cutting unfamiliar equipment apart simply to identify the metal can create unnecessary risk.
